Tasting Note

The years of experience growing Chardonnay in the Russian River Valley shows here: well-integrated, balanced citrus flavors of lime zest, green apple and quince, as well as earthy undertones and notes of hazelnut. Organically grown and hand harvested, Rubia Chardonnay has richness and a long, lingering and complex finish. Aged in oak for twelve months, it maintains a bright acidity, while neither being buttery or oaky.

100% Chardonnay (Wente Clone), 12 months French oak, beautifully balanced 12.5% alcohol, only 100 cases made.

About the Winery:
From fellow-Texans Margaret and Joe Valenzuela. Both are from the small town of Alpine, in West Texas. Joe chose to name their wines after his wife —“Rubia” means blonde in Spanish and refers to Margaret's childhood nickname when living in Mexico.

About the Winemaker:
With more than two decades of winemaking expertise, Julien Fayard is one of Napa Valley’s most respected winemakers producing California varietals with French finesse. He believes in producing wines with an identity, exploiting what makes each one unique. Julien’s wines are a pure expression of their terroir, highlighting the specificities and characteristics of the fruit, vineyard management, soil and climate. He has a track record of building brands both in terms of quality and market presence.

Originally from France, Julien began his career as a winemaker producing quality rosé at his family’s winery in Provence. In Bordeaux he worked at Lafite Rothschild and Smith Haut Laffite before relocating to Napa Valley. In Napa, he worked with Quintessa before becoming Philippe Melka’s director of winemaking for a few years before launching his own projects. He currently makes wine for several clients (Lail Vineyards, Gemstone, Dalla Valle, and more) and several of his own brands. Julian is also a partner in a 12 acre site in Coombsville which includes five acres of vines (Covert Estate).
